Tongues: Let's Get Into It!
1 Corinthians 14:1-22
1 Corinthians 14:1-22
1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in
his spirit he speaks mysteries.
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater
is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to
you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?
7 Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a
distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp?
8 For if the bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?
9 So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken?
For you will be speaking into the air.
10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning.
11 If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be to the one who speaks a barbarian,
and the one who speaks will be a barbarian to me.
12 So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.
13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
15 What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will
sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
16 Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say
the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?
17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified.
18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
19 however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others a
lso, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be
mature.
21 In the Law it is written, “BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS
I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord.
22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy
is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
1 Corinthians 14:1-4
1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands,
but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
See 1Corinthians 14:1-4…
1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands,
but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
“tongue” is false
1Corinthians 14:4,
4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
1Corinthians 14:13,
13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
1Corinthians 14:14,
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
1Corinthians 14:19).
19 however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct
others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
See 1Corinthians 14:5-6…
5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is
one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you
either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?
“tongues” is genuine
1Corinthians 14:5,
5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one
who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
1Corinthians 14:6,
6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you
either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?
1Corinthians 14:18,
18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
1Corinthians 14:22).
22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a
sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
Even the true gift of “tongues,” pales in comparison to the gift of prophecy,
which builds up the church.
The gift of “tongues,” was speaking known languages, not gibberish or private
prayer language or god or angel language
(see Acts 2:2-8).
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the
whole house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on
each one of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit was giving them utterance.
5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each
one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.
7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?
See 1Corinthians 14:9-10…
9 So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken?
For you will be speaking into the air.
10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning.
Known languages, clearly understood.
See 1Corinthians 14:11…
11 If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be to the one who speaks a barbarian, and the one
who speaks will be a barbarian to me.
A language not understood, is gibberish.
See 1Corinthians 14:12-13…
12 So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.
13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
Genuine tongues-speaking was translated, otherwise it was not from God.
See 1Corinthians 14:14-17…
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
15 What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with
the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
16 Otherwise if you bless in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the “Amen”
at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?
17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified.
If a message isn’t understood it cannot benefit the listeners.
We grow and are transformed to serve by the renewing of our minds
(see Romans 12:1-2).
1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice,
acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you
may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
See 1Corinthians 14:18-20…
18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
19 however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather
than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.
“Grow up, quit acting like children.”
See 1Corinthians 14:21-22…
21 In the Law it is written, “BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL
SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord.
22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign,
not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
Tongues is a sign to unbelievers, prophecy is a sign for believers.
(see 1Corinthians 12:7-11;
7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge
according to the same Spirit;
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of
spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
1Corinthians 14:1,
1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
1Corinthians 14:3-4,
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.
4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
1Corinthians 14:5b)
5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies
than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
Tongues weren’t given in Hebrew, but were revealed through Gentile languages
(Acts 2, 10, 19)..
Hebrew was thought to be the language of God and His people;
but tongues forever changed all that
(Isaiah 28:11),
11 Indeed, He will speak to this people
Through stammering lips and a foreign tongue,
“With foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people.”
After the New Testament was completed, tongues were not practiced, preached,
or promoted in the church.
In the 1900s, the Pentecostal movement performed a false and counterfeit demonstration of tongues.
Charles Spurgeon, John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, D. L. Moody,
and many others, concluded that signs, wonders and miracles ceased when the New Testament
was completed; for tongues purpose was to authenticate the Apostles as God’s spokesmen
(2Corinthians 12:12),
12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles.
“The things that mark an apostle--signs, wonders and miracles.”
Jesus didn't teach His Disciples to seek or to speak in tongues; neither did Paul instruct the
church to seek or to speak in tongues.
1Corinthians 14:22,
22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign,
not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
Tongues were a sign of judgment upon the Jews.
Prophecy was a blessing to all believers.
2Corinthians 9:8,
8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything,
you may have an abundance for every good deed;
2Timothy 3:16-17,
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training
in righteousness;
17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
Colossians 1:10-12,
10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in
every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
11 strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness
and patience; joyously
12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.
