Done With Tongues!
1Corinthians 14:20-40
See 1Corinthians 14:20-22…
20 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be
infants, but in your thinking be mature.
21 In the Law it is written, “BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES
AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS
PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” says
the Lord.
22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but
to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but
to those who believe.
Prophecy edifies the Church! Tongues judges Israel.
Deuteronomy 28:49,
49 “The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the
end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose
language you shall not understand,
Isaiah 28:11-12,
11 Indeed, He will speak to this people
Through stammering lips and a foreign tongue,
12 He who said to them, “Here is rest, give rest to the weary,”
And, “Here is repose,” but they would not listen.
“with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to
this people, …but they [will] not listen.”
Jeremiah 5:15,
15 “Behold, I am bringing a nation against you from afar, O
house of Israel,” declares the LORD.
“It is an enduring nation,
It is an ancient nation,
A nation whose language you do not know,
Nor can you understand what they say.
God accepts people from every nation and language who
(Acts 10:35),
35 but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is
right is welcome to Him.
“fear Him and do what is right.”
See 1Corinthians 14:23-25…
23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all
speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will
they not say that you are mad?
24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man
enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all;
25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on
his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among
you.
Sarcasm from Paul?
See 1Corinthians 14:26-28…
26 What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble,
each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a
tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for
edification.
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the
most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;
28 but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the
church; and let him speak to himself and to God.
Worship that honors the Lord, edifies and matures the
body of Christ.
See 1Corinthians 14:29-33a…
29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass
judgment.
30 But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first
one must keep silent.
31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn
and all may be exhorted;
32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
33a for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all
the churches of the saints.
A prophet’s message must be authenticated by the other
prophets.
See 1Corinthians 14:33b-35…
33b for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all
the churches of the saints.
34 The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are
not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as
the Law also says.
35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own
husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in
church.
Headship?
In the home: Ephesians 5:22-23,
22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the
head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
In the Church:
1Timothy 2:11-14,
11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire
submissiveness.
12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority
over a man, but to remain quiet.
13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman
being deceived, fell into transgression.
In society:
1Corinthians 11:3,
3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every
man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head
of Christ.
Women can be teachers and leaders, but they are not to
exercise authority over men in the home or the church.
See 1Corinthians 14:36-38…
35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own
husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in
church.
36 Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has
it come to you only?
More Sarcasm?
Paul’s teachings are not up for debate, they are God’s
sovereign and authoritative Word.
Those who reject Paul’s teaching have disqualified
themselves as teachers and leaders in the church!
See 1Corinthians 11:39-40…
39 Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do
not forbid to speak in tongues.
40 But all things must be done properly and in an orderly
manner.
The proper use of tongues was to be allowed in the
churches. However, prophecy, should be strongly
promoted, for it edifies believers, equipping them to
know God’s Word and do God’s Will.
Romans 12:1-2,
1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to
present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to
God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will
of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
2Timothy 3:16-17,
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching,
for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every
good work.
Ephesians 4:11-16,
11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and
some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the
building up of the body of Christ;
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the
knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure
of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and
there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by
the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all
aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,
16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together
by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of
each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the
building up of itself in love.
